Fear Of Large Bodies Of Water

Thalassophia, which is a fear of large bodies of water, such as oceans, seas, etc; People with Thalassophia has a very hard time with boats, ship, bridges crossing large bodies of water. Thalassophobic symptoms can be mental, emotional and physical. The anxiety and fear can go from mild feelings of apprehension to a full-blown panic attack. The origin of the word thalasso is Greek (meaning sea or ocean) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear). Limnophobia (a fear of lakes), Aquaphobia ( a fear of water), and Thalassophia are all relatives in the water world. There are all kinds of water phobia's, some fear deep water or strong waves, some pools and bathtubs, some whom cannot even enter water and some whom can't even look at large bodies of water.
Thalassophobia is surprisingly common and it can also become debilitating. Thalassophbia can go from mild feelings of apprehension to a full blown panic attack. These people are prisoners to the irrational feeling of panic. For most individuals the closer they get to their fear, the more panicked they become. Fear is a physical response, so when you think about what you are afraid of you panic without actually being there. Most people that has Thalassophobia understand that their fears are excessive or unfounded but the cannot overcome it because it is an unconscious thought.

Symptoms -

the symptoms vary depending on the person and their fear level. Extreme anxiety, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating (excessive) nausea, and shaking. Again, these symptoms vary from person to person and fear level, the more severe the symptoms the more severe the phobia.

Behavior Therapy -
on doctor analyzes as systematically desensitizing the person from the effect of the symptons.

Exposure Therapy -
Similar to behavior therapy exposes person to things that trigger their fears, then work to over come them.

Additional Therapies -
Hypnotherapy effective in some however has success on long term sessions.

Medications -
Antianxiety and antidepressants given in junction to psychotherapy.

A grandmother and her most beloved grand-daughter were on their way to Florida to take the grand-daughter back home to her mother. Grand-daughter was excited about seeing her "Mommy" and grandmother was excited about seeing her daughter. Along the trip, they are singing, talking and just having a wonderful time

Escambia Bay Bridge (a scream) Grandmother is terrified of bridges over water. Beginning to get closer and closer to the entrance of the bridge, the more terrified she became. Beginning to cross the bridge, her breathing became short and sporadic. She began to sweat, shaking uncontrollably. She became tensed now looking for a way out because she knows that she is not going to make it. Finally she see the opportunity to turn around. She drives all the way back to the beginning of the bridge and tries to calm herself down. At this point the grand-daughter became very concern about her grandmother's condition

"Nannie? Are you Okay"? the granddaughter asked.
The grandmother didn't answer because she was trying to get herself together. This is all that she can hear in her head as she try to get herself together.
"Okay you can do this (Nannie Nannie) it's going to be okay, (Nannie you okay) I can't do this, yes you can (Nannie) Oh my God (Nannie what's wrong) by this time she made it back to the entrance of the bridge - SAFE - Not for long.

As she escaped her horror, she pulled up to the toll booth, "Excuse me how con I get to Pensacola without having to cross this bridge"? Grandmother said. The toll booth worker seen that she was a little shaken says, "Ah either a airplane, boat or you are going to have to cross this bridge. Sorry mama". "Oh great I guess I'm going to have to cross this bridge. Jesus, What's the toll". She said. "$4.00 Mame". the toll worker. "Another $4.00 Jesus". Grandmother said. Directly after paying the toll sh pulled off to the side of the road for a little pep talk and to get herself together. "Kali, grandma need for you to sit quietly while I'm going across this bridge. Nannie needs to focus Okay"? Grandmother said.
She began her journey across this bridge. She began to shake, breathing deeply, and sweating profusely. Consistently saying, "It's okay almost there,,,,,." Finally making it to the other side, (whew) a sigh of relief. With her hand across her mouth, Kali began trying to talk and grandmother said, "Oh I'm sorry sweetheart, you can talk now". "I'm so proud of you Nannie". Kali said

On September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan struck Pensacola, Florida, with 120-mile-per-hour winds that severely damaged the 2.5 mile I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay. When that hurricane came through it took 3,400 feet of the bridge and dropped it into the bay making the commute over an hour detour. The Escambia Bay Bridge was 2.6 miles long. In 66 days after Ivan came through Pensacola Florida, the Escambia Bay Bridge was reconstructed and traffic was allowed to use it once again
